Running A Race Through Roads, A Mud Run And More

By Chloe Gib

The popularity of running has grown exponentially in the past several years, as the focus on fitness in the United States has increased. A new breed of racing called the mud run has emerged during this period and become highly sought after by runners and fitness gurus alike. An athlete can find this type of mud run Sacramento and in Lathrop, plus a few other, more traditional options as well.

With both a 5k and 10k option, the Merrell Down and Dirty Mud Run Sacramento provides a challenge to everyone. By choosing a 5k, the individual will have to run 3.1 miles, whereas a 10k requires 6.2 miles. The runner starts both races on hard packed sand and ends it, after dark, in a mud pit. In between, he will face wooded trails and brush.

Also available in this city, The Running Dead Zombie Run presents runners with the dual challenge of a military boot camp style obstacle course and attacking zombies chasing them. Participants wear a flag around their waist which the zombies try to rip off as the athletes tear through the first part of the 5k. If they do not lose their flag, then they survive the zombie apocalypse. All participants must end the course by dredging through a mud pit.

The Lathrop Mud Run on the Farm is a 5k course of obstacles put on by the Dell'Osso Family Farm each year. There are 15 different obstacles, including a water slide, hay pyramid, pumpkin mash and monkey bars. The people that put on the race even provide mystery hurdles, unknown to the runners until they come upon them. The race doesn't only end with a mud pit, but begins with one too.

Athletes love the 13.1 mile challenge of a half marathon, another of the running events in Sacramento. Traditionally, these do not have obstacles, but are simply courses that are run on dirt or pavement. Sacramento offers three options for this length of road race; the River City Half, the Urban Cow Half and the Shamrock'n Half marathons.

For those with more stamina, the city also has available 26.2 mile races, or full marathons. In fact, the California International Marathon, a world-class event, actually takes place here. One other option includes the River City Marathon.

The mud run Sacramento and traditional road races will bring runners from all around to visit and participate. They offer not only great competition and camaraderie, but also a lot of fun. It is a great opportunity for participants to see this great city.
