How To Learn To Play Golf Can Be A Challenge

By Patty Goff

Golf is a very popular sport that many enjoy as a favorite past time. Some find it as a method of creating tranquility and release from a day filled with the stress and pressures of life. It has become a type of sanctuary to those that love the sport. However, everyone isn't as skilled when it comes to playing. Many are actually intimidated with all the terms, lingo, and skill associated with it. How to learn to play golf is a quest for the golf-lover at heart.

When learning about golf, it is so important to first learn the basics. Part of that is learning the object of the game. It is simply learning how to guide a ball with a clubbed instrument and hoping that it gets into each hole on a golf course, but in the correct order! Normally, there are either 9 or 18 holes that are played. The winner of the game is determined by tallying up the results after the last player puts the last ball into the last hole.

Learning how to keep score is also very important. Surprisingly, a low score in golf is a good score. Each player receives a point for each time they swing and hit the ball with their club. Therefore, the fewer swings a player takes and is able to get the ball into the hole, the more likely they are to win.

There are certain terms such as par, that are very important. Par is the assignment of the number of points attached to the hole. Once a golfer meets the point value, he is said to be "on par." Other terms that need to be learned are bogey, birdies, and a hole in one.

The course is definitely good to know. Five parts make up the course, with one of them being known as the "tee box." Positioned between the green and tee box is the fairway. Places that define the other types of the course are the rough, putting green, and the hazard. Hazards define more of what can be elements such as sand and water that makes it difficult for a ball to escape.

New players are encouraged to learn the difference in club usage. Clubs types fall into the category of putter, iron, and wood. Certain physical properties and advantages are often associated with the club chosen.

Standing properly often takes practice. There is power in knowing how to stand and where to stand. How a player swings can determine how far the ball will soar. The game begins when every player hits the ball out of the tee box. It is hoped that it lands on the fairway or green. Every player gets a chance to get their balls in the hole by following the starting order.

Golfing is somewhat dangerous, so golfers should stand away from the fairway as the player swings as to not get hit by a soaring ball. Each player must tally their scores for one hole, and then move on to the next. Golf rounds can last anywhere from three to five hour.
