Since a knife is a cutting tool, a person not knowing what a pocket knife does would say that it's a tool used to cut pockets. As this is familiar, you will probably hear a laugh and a "no" followed by some description of what this really is. The Swiss Army pocket knife was introduced to serve many purposes. Apart from its primary blade it typically has several additional features such as a screw driver, a letter opener, a can opener and these features can vary in each product.

To keep all of these features perfect, a pivot point mechanism was adopted and it is skilfully covered by the handle.

Swiss Army pocket knives are usually red with a cross and a shield as the logo imprinted on the side of the handle. This reminds users about Switzerland since the Swiss Army pocket knife had its origin from Ibach Shwyz, Switzerland.

"Swiss Army" are officially used by Wenger and Victorinox since these two companies are the original suppliers of pocket knives to the Swiss Army.

Whilst the term "Swiss Army was used by both Wenger and Victorinox, the whole phrase "Swiss Army knife" was made famous by the US Army. This term is now used around the world to refer to pocket knives associated with quality tools that has multiple uses.

Swiss Army knife is such a breakthrough tool making one think how was it developed. Credit is given to a man named Karl Elsener who wanted to create a knife that can be distinctively Swiss since pocket knives were originally from Germany.

To manufacture pocket knives from Switzerland better than the German ones, Karl Elsener developed a mechanism which enables the handle to comprise additional features including the second cutting blade and corkscrew. To set his pocket knives apart from the others, he stamped a cross and shield on them. Thus, the first multi-purpose pocket knife was introduced.

Over the years, a lot of changes and additions were made to the Swiss Army Pocket Knife. These days, when buyers want to purchase a Swiss Army pocket knife, they can choose between various models according to which one best suits their lifestyle and needs.
