Things Found In Emergency Survival Kits

By Alyce Powell

Nobody likes it when an emergency strikes, but they are unfortunately a part of life. If there is some kind of power outage or natural disaster in your area, you will want to be prepared. Emergency survival kits are one way for you to not only be prepared, but to possibly save some lives, depending on the situation.

In addition to a kit, it is never a bad idea to stock up on food. Canned goods and other foods that have long shelf lives are usually best. In an emergency, your power might go out, which means food in your refrigerator or freezer might end up going bad. You should use up as much of this food as possible first, then dig into your nonperishable food stash.

Just like food, the amount of water in these packages is just enough to get you by, so you really don't have extra in case of extreme thirst, extra people, or even just to help keep yourself clean. Buy extra bottled water and keep it in a safe place where it can be easily grabbed and consumed in case of a big event where you might not immediately have access to clean water.

The wide variety of kits available today are usually focused on disasters, many of which are caused by extreme weather or natural events beyond our control. One such example is an earthquake, which are common in areas on or near a fault line. Theses particular packs are geared specifically for conditions that may occur after an earthquake, and usually have the bare essential to last a certain amount of days for two to four people.

Another specialty package available is meant specifically for hurricanes or any kind of weather condition where there might be storms or heavy flooding. These have all the items you would need for survival, and might have extras like blankets to keep warm and dry. These are also supplies with a specific amount for each person, so order according to how many people you would anticipate having to feed.

Search and rescue kits are another type that is available on the market, and it may just save the life of someone you love or know. The items in one of these can vary greatly, but one item you might find is a bright vest, usually in shades of orange or yellow with reflective material. These allow you to be seen at night in case of a power outage. There might even be a portable stretcher that can be used in case of a medical emergency.

Not all emergencies are due to inclement weather, some have to do with a faulty car part. If you find yourself broken down on the side of the road, hopefully you have a pack in the trunk of your car. This is especially important if you live in a rural area or travel through them often, because help may not come for several hours. Keep one or more kits in your vehicle that have flairs, first aid supplies, and water at a bare minimum.

There are all kinds of emergency survival kits available to the public. Some have only the very basics, while others have lots of extras for use over an extended period of time. Think ahead to any possible emergencies you might have, then buy the kits that are right for you.
