Turkeys are big birds native to the American continent and a staple food in Thanksgiving celebrations. The males are called gobblers due to the gobbling sound they produce while the hens are unable to do it.

Going to a spring turkey hunting Texas is a way of experiencing this fun with a chance to capture one yourself. Here are some essential during hunting turkeys you need to know.

Locate a place where you can hunt them and these places could be on public or private lands. The state has a large population of these birds but the public areas available to hunt them are very few. Private lands are more common and you need to pay to be able to get in these areas but the advantage of doing it here is that you will have fewer competition on hunting.

Determine when is the best time to hunt for turkeys so you could prepare for this activity. Spring is the best season to do it because this is their breeding season as well. Gobblers are the only legal ones you should kill so that hens can breed and lay eggs during this season and you can locate these gobblers easily as they make a sound to attract the females to them.

Doing some scouting before the start of the season is a good way of knowing where a lot of gobblers are located. The indications they leave are plenty helping you know where they have been and examples of these are foot prints and scratch marks made when food searching. Finding the place they roost can be used to your advantage so you could prepare near it and catch one in the morning easily.

Calling sounds are used to attract birds and making them respond to the sound in pinpointing their location. These are useful for finding one that went out of sight or your first one for the day. They are attracted to these sounds because they are thinking that a flock mate is calling out for them making them call back as a response.

There are various types of call sounds, the most common being the sound imitating the one made by hens. These are made in various ways with the use of various devices such as slate, diaphragm and box calls. Study which one you will be needing according to the type of sound you like to make.

Wearing full camouflage is must during hunting to hide yourself and making it difficult for turkeys to notice you. Your whole body should be covered with camouflage and that includes the face by using a mask or a facial paint. You should also wear vest so you would be able to store important tools in the numerous pockets available on it.

Good set up is essential in having them distracted and staying in one place during hunting. Turkeys immediately leave when they sensed danger so decoys are used to make them not notice you. Other set ups could also be done but always have patience when hunting for turkeys.
