How Female Tennis Players Influence Fashion on the Tennis Court

By Bernie Montague

On the tennis court over the last century, fashion trends have changed. Having set trends for centuries, tennis fashion continues to be a regular feature in magazines and on television. With fans who are keen to wear the same brands as their favourite players, the fashion industry is now bursting with sports brands and labels that design clothing suitable for tennis.

One key feature of tennis clothing is the colour: white. Even though this may seem an odd colour choice, because white gets dirty easily and tennis can be a mucky sport if the weather is not good, it has been the colour for tennis clothing since the nineteenth century. Even though the designs of tennis clothing have changed over time, the colour has stayed the same.

The world of tennis today has changed from the tennis fashion that was popular centuries ago. Women tennis players used to wear white skirts that went down to the floor and had a matching white top. In the late 1880s, women used to dress more formally. Women wear tennis clothing that gives them more freedom to move nowadays.

Dating all the way back to the 1500s, men's tennis fashion has evolved in the same way women's tennis fashion has evolved. The first tennis attire, dating back to centuries ago, consisted of wearing stockings and puffed out long shorts. In the 1900s the fashion went from wearing trousers to shorts, which happened as a result of the weather conditions and gave men more freedom to move when playing tennis.

Because tennis fashion remains popular today, fashion designers like Stella McCartney have designed clothing for many famous tennis players, in time for Wimbledon's yearly tournament. The changes that have occurred in tennis fashion so far have been dramatic, which is why it will be interesting to see how the fashion in the world of tennis will adapt in the future.
