Improve your putting with these ten tips

By Jake Smith

Golf can be a lot of fun but if you dont know what you are doing you will become extremely frustrated. Putting can make or break your game so we have decided to give you some tips to help you lower your score by up to ten strokes per game. When you follow these tips you will begin to see how quickly your putting skills will improve.

Learn how confidence improves your golf score

Most amateurs tend to practice on the putting green to simply try and make putts from 10 to 15 feet. Though this may be fun, it is just not the best recipe to gain confidence. Putting is truly all about confidence and the only way to build your confidence is to give yourself putts that you know you can make. Many have said that the best way to improving putting is to simply feel like you can make any putt out there. If your practice session includes hundreds of made short putts, then you will be able to have that same mindset on the course.

You don't need an expensive putter

Though equipment is important, you simply can't depend on your putter to do the work. Understand that professionals can putt well with an old putter while an amateur can putt horribly with a very expensive putter. Having a putter that you are comfortable and confident with is way more important than having the newest putter on the market.

Keep a solid, consistent stroke

Keep your putting stroke consistent and hit the ball as solidly as possible. At first its not so important that the ball goes in the hole. Its more important that you learn to hit the ball firmly.

Have A Routine

Its so important to keep focused on positive thoughts. Even something as simple as a thought can change your posture and muscle fibre activation. Follow a routine that helps you build your thoughts and confidence.

While you putt keep your head down.

You have probably heard this before and its great advice. Keep your head down and dont look up too quickly while putting.

Stay Aligned

Just like with the full swing, alignment is very important. Make sure that your feet, hips, and club face are all lined up towards the hole so that you will be able to put a solid stroke on the ball. Most putts are missed simply because the golfer was not aligned correctly and so you should save yourself some strokes by simply being aware of where you are aiming.

Get your rhythm.

Putt with a consistent speed and your score will improve.

Don't Copy Other Golfers

Developing great putting skills is mostly about practice. Be careful not to copy bad techniques from other golfers.

Closing your eyes for some practice putts.

Once you are lined up and know the distance close your eyes and take the putt. This is a great way to practice sice you have to concentrate and use your other senses to make the putt.

Practice putt over and over again.

As fun as it can be to drive the ball 300 yards, the most important part of the game is to get the ball in the hole. A lot of long hitters will not be able to score low when they don't make any putts but you need to understand that a great putter that hits it short can still score very low. This is certainly why you need to spend almost double the amount of time on the green compared to the driving range. If you are serious about becoming a great golfer, then you need to spend more time on the putting green.

These tips will improve your putting skills and confidence. It takes time and preserverence but the results are worth the effort.
