How to Avoid Boredom on Exercise Machines

By Steven J. Bancroft

I love doing cardio on many exercise machines such as treadmills, exercise bikes, indoor trainer bikes, and elliptical trainers. I also use a stepper and rower on occasion.

However, a recurring matter to deal with is avoiding boredom while working out.

My problem is I get bored when I run or walk outside. This is why I find working out on exercise machines advantageous. How are exercise machines good for avoiding boredom?

Because you have entertainment options.

Some exercise machines have a TV. I'm not a huge TV watcher, but I like watching it on an elliptical or treadmill.

On an exercise bike I can read magazines or a book. This is probably why I use an exercise bike or indoor bike trainer every other day. I love flipping through magazines while riding an exercise bike. This is my favorite way to avoid boredom on an exercise bike.

New technology is making working out even more fun.

For example, there are some treadmills outfitted with large screens and wireless internet. Yes, you can surf the web on some treadmills. This, in my view, is a tremendous development. Surfing the web is wonderful way to pass the time ... or you can work if you like if your work is done on the web (like much of my work).

Another technology that helps avoid boredom while working out is software that integrates with Google Maps so that you can do your workout on a treadmill or exercise that replicates real-world terrain. This is fun because if you have your laptop on a laptop shelf on your fitness equipment or get a treadmill or exercise bike with internet, you can actually use Google's street view and watch the real-world scenery as you proceed through the course.

It's also fun to measure your performance on real-world courses in the comfort of your living room (or wherever you place your exercise equipment).
