How Player May Win Money Playing Blackjack

By Joe Manonn

Blackjack has become a highly popular game of cards in casino play, as well as other settings. Also referred to as 21, the rules are not very complicated, but winning strategies are. Following are some ideas for how player may win money playing blackjack.

In most forms of blackjack, one or more players are playing against the dealer. Each of the players will have at least two cards, and may choose to get more. The dealer starts with two cards, one of which is visible. A player's score is the sum of the values of their cards. The number cards have the value of their number, face cards are worth 10, and aces can be either 1 or 11, whichever is advantageous to the player.

Players win if they either beat the dealers score or achieve a score of 21, but they lose if they go over 21, which is called busting. Players can hit, that is ask for another card as many times as they want until they stand or bust. Standing means no additional cards are wanted for this hand. The dealer is required to hit until they bust or they achieve a score of at least 17.

Once again ignoring many of the complexities of the real game, players can double their money, or even more than double if the score 21 on the nose, called a blackjack. They can also lose their bet. The game can go back and forth very rapidly, which can be exciting. It gets interesting when people try to develop strategies that lead to even small advantages over the dealer.

A basic strategy for blackjack has evolved. Based on the player's hand and the card that the dealer is showing, it recommends either hitting or standing. It requires memorization of a set of rules. In some cases, depending on the rules of the casino, it may give a slight advantage. It is at least better than randomly picking or going on intuition.

Most of the more complex strategies are based on keeping track of what cards have already been dealt from the current deck. This is called counting cards. Done properly, this gives players a estimate of how favorable the remaining cards will be. When the remainder is judged to be favorable, then players should increase their bet amount, otherwise they should decrease it.

Casinos tend to dislike card counting, and many of them will eject players who are caught in the act. This is understandable, as if it is done properly it can give players an advantage over the house. Collusion between players is particularly frowned on. In Nevada, counting cards is legal for individuals, but collusion is banned. One can conclude that it is possible to come out ahead at blackjack, but it is a lot of work.
