Learn About Coues Deer Hunting

By Minnie Lowery

Coues Deer hunting can be a difficult hobby to master. It is important to have a certain degree of awareness and fortitude. In order to have success, a hunter must know the animal as well as the sport.

This smaller version of the white tail, has an incredible sense of smell. They can detect the scent of a hunter from a quarter mile away. They also have an excellent sense of hearing.

A hunter can exercise the sport in the southeastern regions of Arizona. There is a large number of this species in this region of the country, and tags are issued twice a year by the San Carlos Indian Reservation. The tags are issued in late November and again in January.

Another excellent region to hunt is in Mexico. However, the cost of seeking game in Mexico can be quite high. Hunting in Mexico is usually done on private ranches in North Central Sonora and the Northwestern areas which can require a guide.

The best time to hunt is early in the season. The deer will pick up on a hunter's scent and actions. They know to avoid certain areas; therefore the longer into a season a hunter waits the more difficult it is to secure a kill.

The best time of day to hunt is during the late morning. When selecting a vantage point, choose an area that will allow for the most sunlight, but keeps the sun directly out of your face. The animal's back will shine when light hits it, which helps hunters to spot them in the distance.

A good set of binoculars is an important piece of equipment for Coues Deer hunting. Using a tripod for the binoculars is helpful because it limits the movements of the hunter's hands. Another important accessory is a gun sling. The sling allows your hands to be free, which is necessary for climbing or holding your binoculars when needed.
