Making A Profit Through Basketball Handicapping

By George Robison

Whenever playing a coed game of hoops, sometimes basketball handicapping would take place. The bigger stronger guys would give themselves a disadvantage in order to be gentlemen and allow the girls to be more competitive. However, this sort of chivalry is not what most people refer to.

Sports bookies and gamblers use this terminology as a means to predict the results of a game. This applies in b-ball, soccer, football, and other sports. Figuring not only who will win or lose, but by how many points either way, allows a gambler several ways to win.

A novice will usually place bets based on prior statistics or home court advantage. These factors do not necessarily have the greatest impact on the results of a game. Professionals look at many other elements of the competition when deciding where to put their money.

The daily line movement is where to start. Bookies set these up early in the day and try to keep a basically balanced number of bets on each side. This allows them to make a greater profit. However, this morning line moves due to many differing factors.

Public consensus becomes quite clear by game time, but a seasoned gambler knows to be wary of this element. Some gamblers will put money on one team in order to encourage others to do the same. Then right before the game starts, they drop a bunch of money on the other side. An experienced individual knows to look at the starting line-up before going with public consensus.

In basketball handicapping, knowing the scores from previous games between the two teams can be very revealing, as score spread are often consistent depending on how two teams match up. Being familiar with the teams is important, as there are teams with weak offense or a player who gives the ball over too often, and this impacts the outcome. The more a gambler knows about the teams, the better they are able to middle their bet and place a gamble on both sides.
