With Turkey Hunting Kansas Hunters Enjoy Sport

By Sharlene Fleming

When people go turkey hunting Kansas officials encourage their sport by offering various seasons for this bird. Both the spring and fall seasons are the most popular times to hunt for this fowl. Hunters can use both bow and firearms in their attempts. Before they embark on their excursions into the field, however, outdoorsmen are encouraged to secure the proper licenses.

People who want to hunt for turkeys must secure a license from the state's wildlife department. These licenses are relatively inexpensive and are valid throughout the sporting season. A license indicates how many birds a hunter can harvest and what kind of weapon he or she must use. The person must carry this license on his or her person while out in the field.

Some hunters do not require a license. This state allows very young hunters and those in their senior citizen years to hunt without penalty or restrictions. A person who is younger than sixteen or older than sixty four does not need to seek licensing. These individuals may hunt during the seasons without such documentation. However, if a person is between these two age restrictions, that individual must first obtain the licensing required.

People can hunt for birds several times each year. Mid-April usually begins the spring season for these fowl. One week during April may be set aside for archery hunters, while another is typically reserved for people who use shotguns or rifles. Using any other type of weapon during either week could result in a violation of one's licensing and subject that individual to a penalty.

Mid-October begins the fall term of this sport. As with the spring, hunters can use either types of weapons within the appropriate week. The first week may be reserved for archery users, with shotguns and rifles being barred from use. However, the following week, archery users cannot hunt, but rather allow rifle and shotgun users to have their turn. Using a weapon out of season could result in a financial penalty or suspension of privileges.

During both seasons, disabled and youth hunters are also allowed to hunt without interference. The week set aside for these individuals bars more experienced and able-bodied outdoorsmen from going into the field. The sport is reserved for those younger than sixteen and those older than sixty four. Anyone caught outside this age limit may be penalized and have his or her license taken away for the duration of the seasons. This week allows people who otherwise might face a disadvantage have their fair turn harvesting these birds.

Besides paying attention to licensing requirements, hunters are also encouraged to be mindful of other restrictions. Many farmers and ranchers post no trespassing signs on their properties. People are encouraged to avoid trespassing onto someone's land if such a sign is posted. Land owners can have hunters arrested for this crime. People also must wear hunter safety orange vests while in the field to avoid being shot accidentally.

To enjoy turkey hunting Kansas outdoorsmen are advised to follow the laws surrounding this activity. This state requires that hunters get licensed, use the appropriate weapons, avoid violating age restrictions, and seek permission before going into a field. Staying within these mandates allows people to have fun and enjoy a successful hunt. Violating them could result in their being fined and suspended.
