Black Bear Island Lodge Hunting And Fishing From DJ Enns

By DJ Enns

Do I need to bring fishing net? No, Black Bear Island Lodge will provide one per boat.

When is your down season for fishing? Because we are located on the Churchill River System, the water temperature changes very little. The 'down' season is equivalent to approximately 20 fish with only 2 or 3 of them being trophy size.

Do your boats have cushions? All of our boats have swivel, cushioned seats.

How many people fish per boats? Every fishing boat has a fishing guide (no exception). As for guests per boat, we allow up to three guests (2 adults & 1 child) per boat. Typically, there are 2 guests & 1 guide per boat. There is an extra fee for a single guest booking.

What type of lures do you recommend? Spoons, 5 of Diamonds, Silver Minnow, jigs with Mr. Twister tails, Mepps, Musky killers, red eye wigglers & hell benders. Live bait is illegal. Frozen minnows are not necessary. Our Black Bear Island Lodge store had a large supply of tackle.

I like to troll, is that possible? Majority is casting for trophy pike & jigging for walleye. If you prefer trolling or casting, just let your guide know.

Will my guide be fishing as well? That is entirely up to you; however, we recommend that they do. You can learn from your guide as to what the Churchill River has to offer. Your guide's goal is to brag that his guest caught the most quantity & the most trophy fish.

What animals can I hunt? Saskatchewan's finest, color phase black bear.

What are the requirements for flying with a weapon? It's best to check with a travel agent, as this may change often.

I have the hunting package; will I still be able to fish? Yes, all of our hunting packages include the same offer as a fishing package.

What time of day will I be hunting? After shore lunch, we will get you to your stand. Supper will be waiting for you when you return from your hunt.

Will my hunting guide skin my Saskatchewan bear once it's harvested? Yes, after skinning your bear, we will freeze your bear hide.

If I'm hunting, how do I travel to Saskatchewan with my hunting gear, as well as my fishing gear? Black Bear Island Lodge will have a supply of fishing gear available to our hunters. This is available on a first come, first served bases. If this is something you would be interested in, please make sure you check with DJ Enns prior to your trip.

How old must a Saskatchewan hunter be during the time of his hunt? The minimum age is 12.

What is the average size Saskatchewan bear for Black Bear Island Lodge? 30% of our average size harvested bear has been record size black bear.

How many black bear hunters do you have hunting at one time? We allow 6-10 hunters at a time, however, including our fishing guests, we allow up to 24 guests.

How many baited sites does Black Bear Island Lodge have? We have over 52 baited sites - exclusive to Black Bear Island Lodge.

Do I wear hunter orange while I'm hunting? Recent amendments to the regulations have relaxed the color dress code for Saskatchewan. Individuals hunting big game during rifle season are required to wear a suit of scarlet, bright yellow, blaze orange, white or any combination of these colors from the waist up only. Hunters are still required to wear head of any of the colors listed, except white.

I would like to use my bow and arrow for my hunt, but I would like to take my riffle in the event that I would get a better shot with it. May I take both weapons to the stand with me? Yes, you may take both weapons with you to the stand. When you purchase a license, there is no specification on weapon.

Honestly, what are my 'real' chances in seeing a bear? We have sites that have been hit by up to four bears at a time. The opportunity is there. Do NOT wear scent cover up.

Which season is easier to hunt? Which season has the largest bears? Saskatchewan's bigger bears tend to be seen during the fall hunts, and they tend to be more of a challenge to hunt as well.
