Cyprus Cycling Holidays

By Michaelangelo Trappatoni

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus lies just off the south coast of Turkey, and sees typical Mediterranean summer temperatures reach the mid-30s˚C. But whilst we most associate this island with beach holidays, Cyprus is also a popular destination for cycling holidays.

Cycling in Cyprus is a very pleasant experience. The north especially offers a wide range of cycle-suitable trails and routes which follow the coast as well as taking cyclists through the more mountainous landscape. The island's diverse scenery is made up of coastal plains to wooded valleys, making it ideal for those not only looking to get off the beaten track, but for an element of adventure too.

Cyprus is proud of its growing mountain biking appeal, with many cycling tours operating on the island. With everything included from accommodation and food to bike rental and guidance, a cycling holiday package adds another dimension to this island. But remember, half and full-day bike hire is also available for those wanting to hit the open road (and off-road tracks) for a shorter period of time.

Bringing from home your own bicycle is not really appealing, which is why there are many bike-hire shops located on the island. Most resorts and hotels have a bike hire service to cater for their guests as well. Despite cycling being very popular in Cyprus, almost none of the routes are sign-posted. A good map - or even better, a guide - is highly recommended to ensure cyclists stay safe and get the most out of the Cypriot landscape.

For many, mountain biking sounds more tiring than tempting, but there are lots of cycling routes to cater for all levels of fitness. Those who seek real adventure should try going cross-country, and for those on a more relaxing holiday then there are coastal paths to follow. But however you decide to cycle in Cyprus, you can be sure that it's a great new way to see the island away from the crowds.
