The difference between running and trail running

By Harley Terrence

Put simply, trail running is quite simply off-road running. It is often over routes that are usually used for hiking but you can also make up your own routes as long as there is a public right of way. But most of all trail running is a fun way to keep fit - and a lot easier on your body then choosing to run on tarmac.

Trail running is simply running through areas with a public right of way that are off-road. Often used for hiking, trail running will take you through and over a variety of terrains, meaning that every trail run is different and will have its own unique obstacles. Because of these obstacles - tree roots underfoot or scree for example - it's important that if you're considering getting started with trail running you get the right equipment.

The most important piece of equipment will probably be your trail shoes - don't go trail running without them. If you do your feet will inevitably get injured and you'll find yourself not being able to run at all for months. Trail shoes have special rigid soles to prevent damage to your feet and may have additional features such as being waterproof. You'll also find that since running on trails is a lot gentler on your body than running on roads they can afford to be less cushioned.

While anyone can pop outside with a pair of trainers and go for a quick run it's likely that if you're trail running you've travelled a little further afield to do so. Make sure you pack everything you'll need for the journey including a way to keep hydrated and any emergency medicine you may need.

To summarise, trail running is exciting, challenging, always a new experience, and suitable for pretty much anyone that could run on roads. With more organised trail runs being held every year, trail running is a sport that looks set to become more popular than ever so it's a perfect time to get involved.
