Get A Better Battery For Your Electric Bike

By Graham Wilson

One of the most vital components of an electric bike is the battery. There are major differences among the various types of batteries sold. So customer, be aware!

Folk like electrical bicycles because they exemplify a green lifestyle. The trick is to make ?going Green? More than a slogan by employing a battery that is less harmful to the environment.

Older Technologies in Electric Cycle Batteries

Many electrical bikes today use sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries, which are older technology but significantly lower in cost. But you get what you pay for. There are Problems with'going cheap ' with these batteries:

Long charge time - Up to 8 hours.

Short cycle life - Good for as much as 300 recharges, they need to be replaced each 12 months.

Extremely noxious pollution produced by the used battery

Heavy in weight - Inflating the load will decrease the expectancy

Keep you're electrical bike as light as feasible! These low cost electric cycles will cost in the longer term in further batteries.

Some electrical bicycle brands utilize a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery, which are lighter, with a high energy density, both important for an electrical bike. Their life is longer than the SLA, at 400 - 600 recharges. But this battery has shortcomings: They lose performance in cold conditions.

They've got a reputation for afflicted with memory effect

This technology is now not up to the minute, so the cost of replacement batteries can be high.

Better Electrical Bike Batteries

The up to the minute in electric cycle battery technology is the lithium ion (or Li-ion) battery. We all use lithium/ion batteries in our cell phones, PCs, PDA's, and other appliances. Lithium ion batteries have powered purchaser electronic devices for a while but their use in electrical cycles is fairly new. In electric bikes, the Li-ion batteries have these advantages:

They are light-weight, simple to recharge employing a standard electric outlet, and are way more lightweight. Most li-ion batteries are 70 % lighter and about 50 percent smaller compared to less expensive, heftier batteries used in some electrical cycles.

The chargeable lithium ion batteries in electrical cycles enable these vehicles to go at speeds of at least 20 miles per hour for a range as high as 40 miles.

The batteries are low-maintenance and can be recharged for only pennies a day. This makes an electrical bike with a lithium ion battery a serious bargain in a period of rising gasoline prices.

They can take a few bumps, and a smart choice if you're going to be riding cross country.

So do these batteries have any Problems? Well, yes: the price. The li-ion can be costly up front, but the battery is good quality, with a long life. The Lithium Ion battery is really worth the extra cost in the longer term.

So select your battery wisely. Buy the better battery.
