It doesn't matter whether you are in Hong Kong, Paris, New York, or Sydney, if you want to play in a poker tournament, there is one waiting for you. Gambling has been around for ages, and poker is one of the most popular gambling games today. But to win, you have to play the game, and using the top 10 poker tournament tips to help you, may get you to the winners table.

Tip #1 - Early in the game is when you want to play tight. The blinds are low, so people throw away money, making mistake after mistake. But by playing tight, being selective about the hands you play, you watch the flies drop off as you move onto the next level.

Tip two - However, the further along the game goes, you are going to have to play more hands. If you think you can sit and coast through, you'll discover how quickly the fast raising blinds kill you off. A winner is an active player, so you need to be an active player.

Consistent bets - In order to keep opponents guessing the strength of your hand, you have to be consistent with your bets. That means when you raise, always raise the same amount each time. If you are always betting the same amount, the others have no idea if you have a good hand or not, and you worry them.

Bluff the right way - Poker is not poker without a bit of bluffing and it's a valuable weapon, if used correctly. You have to make your bluffs believable, otherwise someone is going to call you one it to "keep you honest". Never over bluff, if you are constantly bluffing, someone will pick up on it, and don't try to bluff more than two opponents at once.

Tip five - Remember a tournament is not like a ring game. In a ring game, the winner is the one with the most chips. In a tournament, the winner is the one with all the chips. So even if you are a great ring gamer, you need to adjust your strategy to survive one.

Tip six - You need a better hand than the person who has opened betting, than you would need if you opened betting yourself. This is called the Gap concept and means that you need a semi-strong hand to make a bet, but you need a strong hand to call a bet. This is important to keep in mind when stealing blinds.

Tip seven - Over-valuing suited cards is mistake many beginners make. You'll likely be dealt suited cards about a quarter of the time, but there is only a small chance that you'll actually make a flush. And even if you make a flush, you then have to worry about whether a bigger flush will beat you.

Over-valuing small pairs - Everyone has seen it, the underdog throwing a pair of fours and winning the large pot. But realistically, this doesn't happen often in tournaments, and over valuing your small pocket pairs is a big mistake. If you are going to raise or go all in, do not stake your seat at the table on this type of hand.

Tip #9 - Pay close attention to those blinds. At the start, you'll be playing tight and holding onto your chips while others make mistakes and bet unwisely. As the blinds begin to rise, you'll need to start being more active, taking chances and gambling, otherwise the blinds will eat all your chips up.

Tip ten - The fit or fold criteria will help you decide whether to play after the flop. When a flop doesn't fit your hand, you should fold if there is a bet on the table. When a flop fits your hand, that means it improves it or gives you a good draw to improve on, or your hand beats the board as is.

Poker is all about surviving each round to win it all, and just one small mistake can cost you everything. And, it doesn't matter what skill level you are, any extra tips can always help. Like these top 10 poker tournament tips, anything that can get you to the winning table is worth a try.
