Basics Of ARs And Ar-15 Stocks

By Shanna McNeil

Before going out to buy an AR 15, you should have a good understanding of them. You have what you are looking for clear in your mind or you might find all the options available confusing and perhaps get a weapon that is unsuitable for the purpose you got it for. With a clear understanding of the weapon, you will be able to select the right stock from the different AR-15 stocks that are available.

The ones made for AR 15s fall into two classifications of telescoping and fixed. The names of the two types give away the differences between them. Fixed ones are those whose lengths cannot be altered while those of telescoping ones can be altered.

There are a number of variations of these two types. Examples are skeleton and shorty stocks. However, the majority of the ones that go on AR rifles are made to fit the specifications of either telescopic or fixed designs.

In 1994, the fixed stock became the standard for AR rifles. This is the year when assault weapons were outlawed. The ban has since expired but it is still a lawful requirement in many states that the fixed rather than telescopic stock is used. The fixed stock is also the favorite choice of those who use the weapon for its easy handling and timeless look.

The telescopic stock is fast gaining popularity as well. It is appreciated for its versatility and sleek look. It is available in different models such as the 4 position and 6 position. These labels are given in reference to the number of lengths it is possible to adjust or collapsed which is why they are also called collapsible stock.

The function of being able to lengthen an AR 15 stock is a major advantage. This is because it enables a user to change their rifle specifically how long the pull is. The adjustment can be done to suit the task at hand.

This is a very important detail for military purposes. It can be made shorter for use with armor and for easier carrying. It can be extended to hit targets with dead-on accuracy and for easy use. Many telescoping stocks for ARs are made with pistol grips for even better control.

Always buy stock from a well reputed dealer or manufacturer. Also be sure to get a warranty for it just in case it develops a problem. Also, fit it onto a weapon in the shop to test it and see how it feels to handle it before you buy it.

The legality of your AR and AR-15 stocks is also important. Do check the laws of your state as far as assault weapons are concerned. These vary form one state to another and a weapon that is allowed in one area may not be allowed in another. To help buyers with this, a lot of AR gun and stock manufacturers make post-ban models that adhere to the standards of the former ban and that are accepted in state with bans on the weapon.
