How to Be a Responsible Gun Owner

By Dustin Aaron

If you choose to to be a prudent firearm owner, then you will have to do a few things right off the bat. First, you want to take a handgun safety course. Second, you need to take a fundamental firearm seminar, and finally, you will have to acquire your concealed firearm permit. You need to consider that these three steps are actually only the very minimum that you want to do to become a trustworthy firearm owner, but it is actually a lot more than most current firearm owners do.

The big problem facing the firearm industry is that all of these brand new gun owners are getting approved to carry a concealed handgun, but none of them have any prior formal pistol training. Just picture if we gave everybody their driver's license without any prior legitimate driving education. It would be a calamity on our streets and freeways. This is exactly what is going on in the concealed firearm world.

The very first thing you should do, really before you procure a weapon, is take a handgun safety training course. You can find these at any shooting range or at your local chapter of the National Rifle Association. You have to realize, that buying a weapon is not an event. Owning a firearm is your committment to join a prudent and knowledgeable lifestyle. Mainly, that means you should study like your way of life depends on it. Since the truth of the matter is, your life genuinely does depend on it when you are speaking about firearm safety.

Next, you will have to take a basic pistol course. You want to understand the essentials of shooting. It's not as simple as it looks in the movies. It is extremely hard to just pick up a handgun and strike your target with no prior instructions. You require an expert to tell you how to aim the handgun, how to fire the weapon, and how to do so in a style that actually enables you to shoot where you are aiming. It is not as straight forward as you believe, and this is exactly why you will have to train the process.

And lastly, you should consider getting your concealed pistol permit. Do not be lazy and enlist in a concealed handgun certification class before you have actually had any knowledgeable firearm training. Which is a recipe for failure. Your instructor's job at the concealed handgun licensing class is not to train you how to operate your firearm. You must already know how to shoot your gun before going to the class. You will want to already know how to field strip your firearm before going to the class. You will need to already know how to maintain your gun before the class. And you will need to already know how to clear fundamental firearm malfunctions way before you step foot inside a concealed firearm class.

Just imagine how outrageous it would be if a teen showed up to her driver's license driving test and said, "All right, teach me how to drive." That actually is the existing state of affairs in the concealed pistol licensing business and it is insane. Learn to be a responsible gun owner, then get your concealed pistol permit.
