Rebuying: A Poker Tournament Strategy

By Hulk Hawking

When deciding whether to rebuy or not in a poker tournament, the first thing you have to ask yourself is "will it be beneficial?" And if the answer is yes, how many times should you do it?

First and foremost, a rebuy happens when a specific tournament allows players to purchase more chips to add to their pile. This is allowed whether a player is still in contention or has already lost all of his chips.

The positive thing about this is that the pot size increases greatly due to the players who keep on adding chips to the pot. If you are already ahead and do not need to rebuy, this should not affect you too much. The fact that your skill has put you in front of players who need to pay their way back in the tournament will probably mean that you will still be good enough to stay in front of them.

Rebuys usually come in the form of single, limited or unlimited rebuys and are usually used to add to your stack or to let you get back in after you have dropped out.

The following factors should play a role in your decision whether to do a play again or not.

1. The skill of your opponents

Do you see yourself as among the good players in the game? Did you just bust out because you ran into a cooler? Did you just have a bad beat? If this is the case then you probably should make your way back into the game and continue.

2. Are the blinds not too big?

If the gap between your chips and the opponent's chips is too big then it probably isn't such a good idea to play since you run the risk of getting blinded out.

3. Do you still want to play?

Defeat can sometimes discourage even the most experienced of players. If this is the case with you, then it is a better strategy to give up for the moment and reevaluate your game for the future.

Knowing that they can rebuy into the tournament usually influences a player's game style greatly. This usually results in a lot of all-ins in the early stages of the tournament because they can just buyin again if they lose. On the other side though, some players get to create a big comfortable lead in chip count putting them in very good positions late in the tournament.

As with all things related to poker, the biggest thing you have to consider will have to be value. If you perceive that rebuying will still offer you a good chance of progressing in the tournament then by all means do it.
