If we are going to excavate the history of mountain bikes, the early records will bring us to seventies. In fact, at the onset of 19th century, some structures of bikes had already been introduced. Yes, there were already known mountain bicycles before.

The account can be verified through a group of combatants called Buffalo Soldiers who made use of custom-built bicycles in 1896. They were used to pass through Missoula, Montana and Yellowstone.

If you care to know reason why mountain bicycles are often connected to seventies, the history tells us that the first riders of mountain bikes organized a sport bicycling contest during those eras. This event was actually called the original downhill drive test.

In 1976, a bicycling competition was carried out on a highway called Repack Road located in Fairfax, California making the place historical. However, there were no decent mountain bikes that time. What were available back then were balloon-tired bikes. These were modified bicycles with gears and BMX-like handlebars called clunkers. Time gaps executed by riders were varied.

As the eighties entered, some companies discovered and built this kind of bicycle. And as the years passed by, new improved bicycles are being introduced. These bikes are more efficient and heavy-duty compared to bicycles of before.

In this day and age, bicycle competitions are being held in various countries. Events like free ride, cross country, downhill among others are common.

In 1988, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and Museum was created to recognize all the people including events behind mountain bicycles. You can visit this place at Crested Butte Colorado.
