Is it a fact that self confident people are successful? I would say 100% yes. However, some people would consider this question an opinion. In running or any sport, especially from a coaching standpoint, I can tell immediately if an athlete or high school runner will crack under pressure or rise to the occasion by knowing if they have self confidence.
Confidence can be felt by the competition. If they are aware that you have confidence then you have an advantage before you run against them. Think of the best athletes in the world and their specific sport. Do they seem self confident?
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines self-confidence as confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities. What if you lack that quality? If so, we can give you advice and help you become more self-confident.
There are many benefits for a high school runner to be self-confident. Here are 5 benefits:
1. Emotions are positively affected.
2. The ability to concentrate improves.
3. More likely to try harder.
4. Your wanting to achieve more.
5. Performance goes up.
Although there are many other benefits, these are areas that highly effect performance in running at any level. These areas are what we teach the high school runners that attend our running camps. If you lack self-confidence, then it is more prevalent than you will ever know. A confident cross country runner will find your weakness and you will not have a chance to beat them again.
3 ways to build a high school cross country runner's self-confidence:
1. Compete at a level that allows you to grow.
2. Have a plan and prepare. Preparation allows you know the outcome because you are ready for it.
3. Surround yourself with successful people. People that are successful are self-confident. They will help if you ask.
Goal setting is a crucial step in building self-confidence. You will need to create goals to assist you in becoming faster and helping confidence as you achieve them.
6 principles of goal setting:
1. Set specific goals.
2. Set moderately difficult but realistic goals.
3. Set long and short-term goals.
4. Set performance and process goals as well as outcome goals.
5. Set practice and competition goals.
6. Record goals.
If the high school runner believes in you, then building self-confidence will be easy. However, be aware of common problems in goal setting. These include convincing the runner to set goals, failing to set specific goals, setting too many goals too soon, failing to adjust goals, failure to recognize individual differences, and not providing follow-up and evaluations.
High self-confidence in high school running can be achieved with practice. Once you build it, you will be tougher and faster. More importantly, you will achieve success.
