Advice for group riding

By Phoebe Henderson

Cycling goes far beyond just being a mode of transport for a daily commute or an activity they enjoy every once in a while. Cycling is extremely popular and for many people it is more of a hobby, with people taking to two wheels at every opportunity. Some people choose to cycle alone, whereas others prefer to cycle with friends. Some people take it one step further by finding cycling groups that go on regular excursions. Cycling groups can usually be found online and there are many that people have set up around the country. You should have no problems finding your closest cycling group. Before joining a group, there are a few things you should remember.

Firstly, you should always check that the group are of a similar level of fitness and experience as yourself. It would be pretty embarrassing if you turn up to a professional cycling club with your rust old bike and you can't keep up with the pack! Although it's good to be ambitious about your cycling capabilities, you also need to be realistic.

As with any cycling trip, you must always be prepared for any eventuality. Take plenty of food and drink; don't assume that you'll be stopping for refreshments on the way until you get used to the group's routine. Check the weather forecast before you leave the house and take appropriate clothing for the day ahead.

It isn't essential to get a specialist bike, however you should make sure that your bike is up to the journey ahead. It will be annoying and embarrassing if your bike constantly breaks down and the group have to wait for you. Make sure you service your bike regularly to spot anything that could be wearing out or working its way loose. Keep tools with you at all times so you can fix anything on the spot. It is always advisable to keep a spare inner tube with you in the event of puncture.

When you are riding in large groups, you should remain constantly aware of your surroundings. Ensure that there is enough room between yourself and the other cyclists to avoid danger. Also, just because you are riding in a group, the rules of the road still apply and the appropriate road safety measures should be taken.
