Young English Prospect Signs Four Year Deal With United

By Ben Williams

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised midfielder Tom Cleverley for deciding to sign a new four-year deal with current club Manchester United. Cleverley penned his new contract earlier this week at Old Trafford, with the promising English youngster missing out on international duty with England due to a foot injury.

The club's fans were quite clearly excited to hear the breaking news, but nobody was more excited than the hugely experienced Manchester United manager himself, with Ferguson revealing that the thought of having the inexperienced yet composed 22-year-old on the United books for the next four seasons makes his job as manager of a top Premier League football club a much easier one: "[Tom] has a good footballing brain which, coupled with his energy and ability, makes for a player with a fine future".

Rewind just 12 months, however, and Cleverley's future with United was far from certain. He only made his competitive debut for the current Premier League champions a couple of months ago during the team's 3-2 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield, but has since become a shining star in a youthful United team threatening to turn into a side capable of dominating the next decade or so of domestic competition.

The ever-beleaguered Fabio Capello, meanwhile, has also been extremely impressed with the professional manner in which the player has fitted in so seamlessly at a top English club like Manchester United, with the player's solid grounding in English football, Cleverley learning the basics in the world-famous United academy before experiencing loan spells with clubs including Leicester City, Watford, and Premier League outfit Wigan, looking like it has handed him with the ideal base upon which to build a long international career.

With England qualifying for next summer's European Championships after a 2-2 draw against Montenegro last Friday, it seems likely that Capello will use the friendly fixtures between now and then to see how Cleverley could fit into a midfield likely to include a number of established names, such as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. United fans, however, remain convinced that Capello will be presented with a man more than capable of running the show from the middle of the park in the same way that world-famous duo have been doing for over a decade.
