Tips To Know Before Cycling In Europe

By Eric Simmons

Cycling in Europe is a popular activity for tourists to do. Actually, bike riding is one of the main forms of transportation for many locals living in Europe. Many tourists find that traveling by bike through a country makes it easier to meet new people, fall upon little shops and markets that they would not normally find, and experience new smells and sounds.

A few pointers are important to know before you take off on your biking trip. Many people think that the idea of cycling throughout a country is fun and exciting- which it is-, but they fail to realize how much preparation is required before setting off on the adventure.

First, bicycling for an extended period of time-often five or more hours a day, and anywhere from seven to thirty days- can be physically straining if you are not use to it. Before you plan a trip, prepare yourself by taking long bike rides in your area for a couple months, and make sure you are in shape.

The next thing you should do to plan for your trip is to figure out what the best bike for your adventure will be. A mountain bike is the best choice for people who are not experienced bikers. This is because a mountain bike is built to handle all types of surface ground. The only drawback is that these types of bikes are heavy and will slow you down. A tour bike will be lighter and easier to ride on a concrete or cobblestone surface.

Determine where you want to go, when the best time of year to bike is, and how much lodging/food/flight tickets will cost. There are many websites that offer cycling packages and do a lot of the planning for you. They can help you decide where you want to go and how long you want to go for. In some countries, it is better to bike in the winter, or when it is cooler. It is not very enjoyable to bike when it is ninety plus degrees outside.

Make a plan of what you will do and where your destinations are each day. Some people enjoy living life on the edge and not making plans. This can be fun, but remember that you only have a bike. If you cannot find a vacant hotel or hostel, you may be riding your bike at all hours of the night.

Do not buy a bike when you arrive, but bring one from home that you are comfortable with. If your bike breaks down, or you decide half way into the trip that it is not comfortable, there is nothing you can do at that point. It is best to know how far and how long you can go on a bike before you set out on your trip; and, knowing that you are familiar with the bike is a big part of your comfort.

Search for some online tips for cycling in Europe before you plan your trip. There are many factors to take into consideration before you leave for your great adventure. Only a few tips have been mentioned here and there are many more important points to consider.
