Camelbak is a brand synonymous with hydration while on the move but did you know the origins of this simple yet often lifesaving device. No...Well I'm going to tell you. Way back in 1988 there was a cycling nut by the name of Michael Eidson competing in a mental 100 mile road race aptly named "hotter'N Hell 100" in the mental summer heat of Texas.
Being that there was very few places to refill water is a vital part in just completing the race. Mr Eidson, a medical technician by trade, takes an intravenous bag and fills it up with water puts it in a tube sock an stuff the lot down the back of his jersey and pulls the thin hose over his shoulder and clamps it to his jersey with a clothes peg - the CamelBakis born!
Today Camelbak is the world leading brand in hands free hydration and if any of you who are reading this are into any kind of endurance sport you must surely own one already!
As you would expect they now have products to suit every eventuality from standard water bottles to hydration backpacks with over 3+ hours of hydration and now a nifty new electronic gadget which converts your Camelbak reservoir into an intelligent hydration system or as they call it a Flow Meter which measures how much water you drink and how much is left in your reservoir. It even goes as far as to allow you to program your personal hydration goals (if you know anyone who has these then let me know! And all for under 30! Now this might be over kill if you live in the leafy suburbs and go for your morning jog however in the event that you find yourself in the middle of the dessert and three days walk from any kind of civilisation then it's this kind of forward thinking that saves lives!
In all seriousness although if you'd like a portable drinking method then you superior obtain a Camelbak.
