Cycling In Michigan Has Something For Everyone

By Allan Hatchell

An increasing number of people are becoming aware of the need for outdoor activities, both for children and adults. Bike riding is an ideal example of a physical activity that improves overall health and is good fun for the whole family. This may be part of the reason that cycling in Michigan is so popular. The bike trails in the state cover hundred of miles, offering unfettered views of the natural beauty of flowers, lakes, and hills.

Michigan cycling events range from family rides by the lakeside to competitive adventure races. The weather is generally a bit on the cold side, so most events take place during the summer and autumn. In terms of accommodation, cyclists can choose to camp out near the trails or spend the night in lodges and inns.

Popular summer tours are put on by the League of Michigan Bicyclists (LMB) and the Tri-County Bicycle Association (TCBA). LMB events usually last for more than one day. The two-day Pedal and Paddle Tour begins on a Saturday. Cyclists can ride at their own pace, covering anywhere between ten and fifty miles along the Hart-Montague trail. Afterwards, they kayak on the White River, located in Manistee National Forest. This event provides an early summer adventure, and is perfect for the entire family.

The LMB offers other events that provide an opportunity to explore the beauty of this great state. The Sunrise Tour lasts for three days, and the Michigan's Upper Peninsula (MUP) Tour goes on for seven days. Both of these tours are enjoyable family activities.

The TCBA is the largest biking club in the state. It hosts tours that cater to riders of varying skill levels. The association's most popular activity is held each year over Labor Labor Day weekend, and lasts for four to five days. Participants have a great time riding along different routes from Lansing to Mackinaw City, or even further. The proceeds from this event go towards funding other statewide cycling projects.

For those who are more ambitious about riding, there are cycling scholarships available. One of the most sought-after is the Iceman Scholarship. It is awarded to student athletes from the state who place well in the Iceman Cometh Challenge. Recipients of the scholarship also need to demonstrate their commitment to the sport, as well as strong character traits.

Cycling in Michigan has something to appeal to the taste of every cyclist. Individuals, teams, friends, and families have chosen to take up this sport. Some ride competitively, and others do it for exercise or recreation. A number of charity rides are also held each year in an effort to raise funds for worthy causes.
