In America's current economy, many Americans are looking for ways to save some coin. People are forgoing driving themselves to work in favor of carpooling with coworkers. Others have forgone driving all together and have begun to utilize public transportation as their preferred method of travel. However, there are some people who have made the decision to bike to work; they ride a commuter bike to not only to save money, but also the environment and acquire a healthier lifestyle.

In the United States, the cost of a gallon of gas is $4.00. Anyone can see how this can quickly add up. Oil reserves are decreasing, which means that the price of gas will continue to increase. It's simple supply and demand. And because public transportation also replies on gas, the price of bus passes and the like is also increasing. Commuter bikes, also known as road bikes, can cost anywhere from $800 to a couple thousand dollars. However, the cost-benefit analysis still shows you save time and money when you travel by bike.

When comparing a bike rider with a driver, studies have demonstrated that the former are generally happier and healthier than the latter. Traveling by car can be stressful. There are the dangers of other driving trying to multitask as well as the frustration of being stuck in traffic. Bike travel is more relaxing for the individual. It allows the rider time to simply think and reflect while they travel. This form of travel also promotes good time management skills as it takes longer to travel to any given place by bike, so the rider must factor that into their daily plans. Moreover study shows that people who ride to work or wherever verse car are happier as well as healthier.

Besides being good for your wallet, commuter bikes are beneficial to the environment as bike riding means lower emissions. Each mile pedaled saves nearly one pound of carbon dioxide according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. It's also important to note that bike riding promotes health. You can strengthen and tone your muscles on your daily commute and well as develop your endurance.

Using a commuter bike is the most cost-effective substitute for driving yourself to work. Biking allows you to save hundreds of dollars that would otherwise be used to purchase gas. It also requires you to learn to manage your time. Another benefit is that you are lessening your carbon foot print, while increasing your activity and setting yourself up for a healthier lifestyle. Before you decide to start commuting by bike, make sure that you know your region and if biking will actually prove advantageous to you in your current community.
