How Odd Is A Flip Flop Hub

By Daniel Turbin

It sounds strange and something that had been made up, but a flip flop hubcan be an essential component of enjoyable fixie biking.

You might know by now that a fixie bears one gear and one gear cog. That's a given and the whole aim of the experience it makes. That means the speed and power it makes is all right down to you and your legs. It's a totally different way of having fun in the road than your ordinary 10 gear derailleur set up. Just where does a flip flop hubcome into all of this?

Well it is a smart way of staying fixed gear however changing gear to go well with your terrain. It performs this by having a uniquely geared cog on the opposite part of the wheel. Clever eh? So you fast release the wheel flip flop it over in double quick time then hey presto! Off you go into the blue yonder.

It is an impressive concept that can be further altered. What if you do lots of hill climbing? Subsequently why not fit a freewheel to the 2nd side of the wheel? Turn it over when you go downhill and you can take a well earned rest. Obviously if you do this remember to fit brakes since you can't back pedal to slow down on a freewheel!

So the flip flop hubis definitely a plain thought, which allows you as a fixie addict to keep you fixed gear, however conform beautifully to your circumstances. You lose nothing in terms of functionality and challenge and open a whole new area of landscape. It certainly is not cheating and anybody who states so has never tried using a flip flop fixie. Why not give this a real go. You will never ever believe you survived without it in the first place.
