Guide To How A Real NFL Expert Picks Against The Spread And Wins

By Tonia Michael

If you are interested in learning more about gambling on the NFL this guide will help you out. As well as teaching the basics of how to pick football bets it will also look at how an NFL expert picks against the spread to make the really big money. Football is a game of inches. Here is how to break those measurements down a tad and weigh things in your favor.

There are four main areas of consideration you should be looking at before wagering on or against a team. The spread is, in some ways, the least important if you just want to lay a simple bet. If you want to make the big money, however, it becomes much more vital.

Before you consider the more complicated elements, think first about the most simple: the two teams playing and how good they are. If you have read this far it's safe to assume you have some prior knowledge of the NFL and what teams are good and what teams are not. Look at the win/ loss of both teams and get a decent idea of how they measure up.

The next factor is a bit more complicated. The road record stat is one area where most NFL teams do not cover themselves in glory. Cast your eye down the scores on a week to week basis and you should expect to find 75% of the games going in the home team's favor. Look out, in particular for solid team who don't perform on the road.

What you should learn from that is that is two-fold. Firstly home field advantage is regularly the determining factor in a tight game. Secondly you should look out for strong sides with poor road records and bet against them when they travel. It might seem like a small piece of advice but it is a solid way to build up your winnings.

Next you must look at the date and weather and how that will affect playing conditions. Hard-core gamblers learn about how different teams and key players react to wind, snow, heat and rain. For example they'll work out how reliant a team is on kicking to press their tactics upon a game and then take into account how much wind resistance the kicker will have to deal with. The date is crucial because the time of the season in which it is being played massively effects the outcome.

Say you have the odds on favorites for this season's Superbowl playing a side who have an outside chance of getting a wild card spot. During the first few weeks of the season it would appear to be a fairly easy pick. If, however, it's the third week in December and the favorites have already qualified for the play-offs, while the underdogs are still chasing, the result is far less forgone.

The spread is worth paying attention to as it offers up some good money on teams that might otherwise seem like bad pay-outs. An NFL expert picks against the spread by finding one of two things - either a high flying franchise who have trouble making the spread or a poor performing side who despite losing nearly every game, somehow manage to cover nearly every week. Betting based on this statistic makes the really smart money.
