By Maryellen Lamb

In Florida, residents are permitted to carry a concealed weapon as long as the basic requirements are met. The minimum age to attend a Florida concealed weapons class is 18 although the applicant cannot receive a permit until the 21st birthday. The Floridian must be free from a physical disability that will hinder the person from handling the weapon safely. This person must also be a law-abiding citizen.

A concealed weapon is one that the person intentionally hides from another person's view according to the Florida Statue. The statue is not limited to guns; it also includes electronic devices, billies and knives. The permit allows a person can carry the weapon for self-defense. A separate law covers the actual use of the weapon.

Applications are available on line; however, each downloaded application is assigned a unique tracking number. This means the person cannot duplicate it for any reason. After supplying the needed information, it takes about 30 business days to receive a response. The applicant will not be able mail in the application before completing the concealed weapon permit class.

Upon completion of the class, the company offering the course will issue a training certificate as well as notarize the application. The person's fingerprints must be taken at the sheriff or local police station. Once approved, the license to carry a concealed weapon is valid for 7 years.

Students have several options when attending a class. The student may bring his or her own weapon or borrow one from the instructor. Those who decided to use their own weapon must unload it prior to entering the class. Carrying in a loaded weapon is considered a crime. Every student has the option of one-on-one training; however, it will cost extra. The instructors will provide classes for students on all skill levels.

Individuals with certain convictions are ineligible to receive a permit. Anyone who was convicted of domestic abuse, a felony or any other type of violent crime will not receive a license. Individuals with a controlled substance or an alcohol related conviction are also ineligible. Regardless of the type of permit held, a person with a weapon is prohibited from entering in a school, sheriff office, jail, detention center or court.

Reminders are sent out 150 days before the license expires. The permit holder can send the application directly to the Division of Licensing in Tallahassee or visit any one of the eight local regional offices. At the regional office, a staff member will notarize the unsigned form. Passport photos will be taken as well. However, each person is required to make an appointment. Florida law will allows a permit holder to renew their license up to 6 months after the expiration date. The permit holder is responsible for a late fee. After the six-month grace period has passed, permit holders must reapply for a new permit. Each renewal is valid for 7 years.

The purpose of a Florida concealed weapons class is to make sure people are correctly educated in weapon safety. The instructors will also advise every student of any law changes. The student will learn how to instruct others the house about weapon safety.
