Taking A Florida Concealed Weapons Permit Class

By Maryellen Lamb

Taking a Florida concealed weapons permit class teaches you what you need in order to obtain certification and meet the requirements need to obtain a state issued CCW permit. The laws in Florida do not currently allow open carry. This means you cannot simply carry a gun on the street. You must be licensed. The requirements include taking a four-hour course that teaches you safety and legal issues associated with carrying a weapon.

There are many places to take the class. Those that have been or currently are in the military can typically by-pass this requirement because they have already been trained. Armed security guards have often met these requirements as well. Everyone else must take the courses and can find several private companies through the phone directory or on the Internet. Several organizations including the National Rifle Association, hunter safety course, gun ranges, and the police academy all offer the certified courses.

The licenses are issued by the Division of Licensing through the Department of Agriculture. These are currently good for seven years before needing to be renewed. At the time of your appointment, you will need to present your application, the processing fee, and proof that you have met the certification requirements. At this time, your fingerprints will be taken and stored in their database.

Background checks are mandatory for all applicants. Current state law does not provide for any exceptions to this rule. Florida is a will or shall issue state which means they will issue your permit as long as you pass the background check and meet the other certification requirements.

The costs for the CCW are minimal. Some courses are offered free through various organizations. Others will generally charge a small fee ranging from around $20 up to $100. The law requires a four-hour training course to issue a certification. If you are not sure where to begin, you can search the Internet or contact your local sheriff for advice on obtaining a license. Friends that hunt can also offer advice because they have already had to take the courses. Prices for the license change as the law is updated but is over $100.

There are limitations to the license and where you may port your weapon. State and federal law both place limitations such as preventing guns being taken to courthouses, police and sheriff stations, polling stations, government meetings, schools, and bars. This portion of the law is wide ranging and the course you take should cover it in detail. You will want to be very familiar with the limitations to prevent getting in trouble by accidentally taking your gun into a prevented situation.

Many states offer reciprocity with Florida. This provision means that those states will recognize your CCW license as valid in their states as well. As you travel, you will still want to have knowledge of proper carry and storage procedures for each state. While they will recognize your license, they have their own requirements regarding transport.

You can find a Florida concealed weapons permit class through a simple search. During this course you will learn safety procedures, laws related to the license, and obtain the certification to obtain the license. Through the course, you need to make an extra effort to be aware of the limits on when and where you can take your gun.
