City Bike Roads: Why Should The Building Process Be Stopped?

By Rob Sutter

When it comes to the vehicles which have the most space afforded to them, cars definitely seem to be at the top. Anyone can make the claim that these are most common when it comes to travel and that there aren't others which seem to reach this level. With other ways of travel that exist, though, don't they deserve to have attention placed on them? That's what I thought when I read about city bike roads being created but it seems like that process has come to a standstill.

Usually, I am not the kind of person who scoffs at news stories with groups of people protesting, since the causes are typically legitimate. However, an article that was posted on the Global Edmonton website spoke about how residents are concerned about the building of such city bike lanes being created. They believe that their accessibility on the road, as car operators, is going to be hindered by these. Bicycle authorities like Linus Bike would most likely weigh in on this kind of story.

One of the specific concerns about these roads being built is a reduced parking space. According to the article, this endeavor could potentially create a 15 minute loading zone if this manages to go through. It's also been said that the people were not informed of this beforehand, therefore making it difficult for them to airing their concerns in the initial stages. I understand that there may be worry with something as big as construction, but I don't feel like there should be any concern at all.

If there's one thing that I would expect these stories to show, it's the element of support. People want to see these roads being created, I am sure, which means that people would want to back it up. Cyclists have been vying for ways to get around safely and the creation of roads intended only for them is something that I am in full support of. I just hope that the backing of others can be seen in time since I don't want to see this level of potential go to waste.

I used to enjoy biking immensely until mine was stolen but I think that anyone can agree that a city bike street system possesses many positives. People, who say that this idea would be more congestive than anything else, may not see the big picture. Cyclists are just as important as those who operate motor vehicles and, in my mind, they deserve a safe way to move about on the roads. Maybe it won't be long until we see more of these come about in packed areas.
