Though it is a good idea to train yourself until you become good at something, it is however important that you stop doing the same terrible mistakes that you might already be doing right now in order to keep on progressing. Some of those mistakes that I will write about are very common among marathoners, so pay attention to them and make sure that you avoid them next time you go for a training session:
No. 1: You might have the wrong goal!! If you just started out, looking to finish first in a race might not be the best objective for you. Be more realistic! If a marathon distance is far too long for you at the moment, take part in a half-marathon race instead and even then, don't expect to finish first. Just be happy if you are able to finish the race, the journey to becoming a marathon champion is a long one, so be a little bit patient.
No. 2: Don't do the same BS exercise that everybody is doing! Do your own research and go find out what works best for you. Work harder on your weaknesses and do not over-exercise yourself. The more you train DOESN'T mean the better you'll become, your body needs some rest from time to time so be wise and rest appropriately.
No. 3: Are you doing some strength training? Many marathoners tend to ignore the importance of that and yet they are extremely important. Strength training will build stronger muscles, bones and ligaments which will in turn reduce the risk of any kind of injury. So include them in your training program if it's not already in there.
No. 4: There might be some lack of beliefs or motivation from your part. Maybe you weren't expecting me to get into the mind stuffs and all that, but believe me, it is very important! If you already don't believe in yourself or you lack some kind of motivation, then your task at hand will be a lot harder than what you would have expected. If you want to achieve something great, you must first BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN DO IT!
No. 5: Don't be in a hurry when you're starting a race! A marathon distance is 26 miles long, you need to be patient, time your run well in order not to be exhausted when you reach half of the distance that you are supposed to. Start at a medium pace and work your way to the top of the pile from that. It will take time to get this right but you'll understand what I'm saying when you'll gain more experience.
No. 6: Stay Hydrated during the whole race! Many marathon runners have no idea about how to stay hydrated during a race and yet it is so simple. The hydration process does not begin at the start of a race but a couple of days before that. You have to make sure that you are always hydrated 2 - 3 days before the competition, during the actual race and after the race as well.
