Riding City Bikes

By Pamela Chiacchiaro

The other day, I was in the city. I always say "the city" as if the entire globe knows exactly which city I am talking about-New York City. The grand city, the greatest city of them all at least in my opinion, although it is the only one I have even been to. I bet that right now you are imagining in your head the city in all of its glory. But being a Long Island girl, I can never really get used to the noise and volumes of people and taxis and buses and city bikes zooming by.

No matter where I am in the city or what time of day it is, I always try to make time to go to take a stroll through Central Park. Central Park is perhaps one of my moist favorite spots in the city, and I enjoy its attempt at bringing the wilderness into urban society. However, the only thing that I cannot stand to see are horses that are enslaved and made to pull heavy carriages all day long no matter the weather. Horses and cities do not mix. But I digress.

The great day about the modern age is that no animal is needed for transportation. In the city, people have the option of taking buses, taxis, cars, motorbikes, trains, subways, and bicycles (or they could just walk). If I lived in the city, I would definitely invest in a high quality bike and ride it everywhere. Bikes offer transportation and exercise, not-to-mention it is free!

Around my hometown, cars are the most used transportation. I cannot help but wonder how much better off the world would be if everyone just used bicycles - the amount of pollution would reduce, people would get more exercise. I always feel great after a long bike ride so I would not mind riding everywhere.

The city is not exactly the best place for cars, which is why most people just opt to walk. But bicycles are always a great option and should never be overlooked.
