The NFL (American Football) Super Bowl is contested each year by the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The first three championships in 1967-1969 were known as the 'AFL-NFL World Championship Game.' The first 'Super Bowl' was not played until 1970, a useful fact to have in mind should the issue come up in a game of trivia. Every member of the team that wins the Super Bowl receives an elaborate and high coveted jewel-encrusted ring.
In the first 45 years since the championship began, the US state that has won the highest number of Super Bowl games is California. Between them, the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders (known as the Los Angeles Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII, played in 1984) have won five and three championships, respectively.
On January 25, 1977, the Oakland Raiders won their first Super Bowl game against the Minnesota Vikings with a score of 32-34. This was Super Bowl XI. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) was wide receiver, Fred Biletnikoff. Snow fell in Miami, Florida, for the first and only time the previous week. The Raiders' next Super Bowl win was on January 25, 1981, against the Philadelphia Eagles. They won 27-10. This was Super Bowl XV and the MVP was Oakland quarterback, Jim Plunkett. In the same month, the television shows, 'Dynasty' and 'Hill Street Blues' were first aired.
The following year, it was Raiders 1, NFL 0 when the Raider franchise moved to the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Raiders only Super Bowl win as the team from LA was in 1984 when they beat the Washington Redskins 38-9 in Tampa, Florida. The Most Valuable Player was Marcus Allen.
In 1982, quarterback Joe Montana led the San Francisco 49ers to their first-ever Super Bowl victory against the Cincinnati Bengals with a score of 26-21. Having led the team to victory just two weeks after undergoing spinal surgery, it is perhaps unsurprising that Montana was voted MVP. The 'Niners' next Super Bowl trophy was captured from the Miami Dolphins in 1985 when, one again, Joe Montana was named MVP. Head Coach Bill Walsh led the team to both of their first two victories.
Super Bowls XIX, XXIII, XXI and XXIX were also won by the San Francisco 49ers.
