Road Cycling Fans Include Athletes And Novices

By Mike Ward

These days motorists can seldom take a drive on any major street or highway and not see a few, if not several, road cycling enthusiasts in the bikes lanes. Often their progress through traffic and along scenic highways seems effortless and motorists might harbor some envy for the fancy road bikes and cycling gear that they see. There is no question that cycling has become a very popular pastime and that a wider variety of people than ever are participating in the activity.

Sometimes when we observe adventure cycling riders sailing along the side of the road it is easy to think that cycling is just a breeze and that it is so simple and easy that just anyone can do it. The truth of the matter is that those who are serious about their recreational cycling have put in a great deal of work in training in order to make it look easy to the casual observer. These avid cyclists are typically dedicated athletes.

But, you don't have to be a top-notch athlete in order to participate in road cycling. Just about anyone who is able to ride a bike can take on one of the easier routes that is appropriate for their fitness level and for their level of biking experience. Young and old alike can enjoy the benefits of biking with a good bike and the right bike gear.

At the same time, cycling can be just about as challenging a sport as anything else that you can imaging. Many professional cycling routes can tax even the very best of athletes because of the steep climbs and frequent changes in inclines along the more demanding routes. These routes should only be considered for those who are in top-notch physical condition.

It should be obvious that a crucial element to safe bike travel is the quality of your bike and other gear that you use. If you plan to be far from a populated area on your biking adventure, then you must be sure to have emergency gear and supplies to tide you over in the event of a problem.

When you decide to hit the road for a road cycling adventure, you must make sure that people know what your plans are, what routes you plan to take and what your timeline is. It is also a good idea to go as a group on these cycling adventures so that you can enjoy camaraderie as well as the safety that comes in numbers. In case you don't have people in your circle of friends or family who enjoy cycling, you can always join a club where you will find lots of people in your area willing and eager to go on a biking adventure with you.
