Choosing a gift for dad this Christmas

By Dexter Dickinson

Seeking out the right gift for golfers can be difficult as the festive season nears. Many people are tempted to simply give a golf voucher to their father and hope that it will do. However, Christmas is about much more than simply having golf gift vouchers to spend and a proper golf present will help to create special memories of this seasonal time of year.

The sheer range of things that qualify as a golf present is quite overwhelming at times, making the gift buyer, especially if they do not know much about the sport, floundering to find the right item. This is when it is good to look for something with a touch of humour or quirkiness to it. Slippers designed to look like golf shoes is one idea.

Such an item can often create a buzz of excitement and humour when Dad opens them up and could even go on to become a trademark piece of footwear for the happy golfer getting them. Certainly, they are much more interesting than a simple golf voucher.

Children can often struggle to find suitable presents on a limited budget and can sometimes rely on golf gift vouchers as they are more affordable. A golf-themed item such as a mug could be a good item for a child to give their father this Christmas. A mug functions as a souvenir and can often be a poignant reminder of the comforts of home and the golf course when the office gets stressful.

Golfers tend to be the kind of people who run out of the little bits of kit they need to play; things like tees, balls and scoring pencils have a habit of disappearing. Little items of kit can therefore serve as stocking filler type gifts. For relations looking to spend more, then perhaps purchasing a full accessories set is the way forward. These usually include a variety of tees for practise and play, tools like spike wrenches or club face checkers and a pencil or two; enough to keep Dad going until next year at any rate.

A good golf present for the more serious golfer who might have played at Celtic Manor is some kit that they will use out on the course. Club head covers are reasonably priced and a useful addition to anyone's golf bag. Often incorporating quirky designs, such as cartoon characters, a wide range is available and a sensible internet search should bring up the kind of design which will be appropriate to the golfer.

Rangefinders are a good golf present for people who are looking to spend more than a hundred pounds on a gift. These electronic devices allow players to calculate accurate measurements whilst on the course, such as how far the green is from the tee. A device aimed at the serious golfer; seeking advice from an experienced player or a club professional is best when choosing this kind of gift.

Golf gift vouchers are handy, but receiving them is not the same as unwrapping something which has been chosen with care. Finding a suitable gift, whatever the price range, will always add to family feelings of festive warmth.
