What Are The Safety Tips For Pocket Bikes?

By Becky Wolfe

Pocket bikes are not toys no matter how much they look like it. They may be designed for fun, but they can also be dangerous if they're not properly handled. Never allow unsafe practices to take away the fun from riding pocket bikes. You can have fun and remain safe as long as you follow some simple rules.

Always wear the right equipment. Dress as though you were riding a big street bike. When it comes to the type of clothing, leather is your best option and you should also wear knee pads, helmets, and elbow pads all the time. Wear goggles and safety glasses to protect your eyes. Buckle the chin strap each and every time. You should also wear leather gloves to protect your hands.

Always inspect your bike before riding. This should become an automatic habit to check before each ride. Checking if the air pressure in the tires is right is another important thing to remember. Check the tension of the chain. Then there's the fuel. The frame of the bike also needs checking. If there are loose bolts or nuts, tighten them. If anything looks or sounds amiss, don't ride! Most of the injuries that occurred are because of individuals sensing something wrong with the bike yet riding them anyways.

Maintenance. This isn't stressed enough. Keep every part of your pocket bike well maintained and cared for. Don't cut corners.

Stay off public streets. Most states don't allow pocket bikes on public streets and many people have been hurt or even killed because they were hit by drivers who could not see them.

Sometimes, undesirable conditions impair your vision and ability to control your bike which is why it's better not to ride during these times. Rain, fog, snow, and darkness can be considered dangerous conditions. You also shouldn't ride your pocket bike if you're impaired. After all, you wouldn't do it with a car, so don't do it with your bike as well.

It's a bad idea to drive your pocket bike at night.

You should keep your pocket bike on surfaces that are smooth and hard. Off-road use are not for these bikes.

Don't even think about trying to double up. Pocket bikes were designed for a single rider and should be used as such.

If you follow these tips, then you can have hours of fun with your pocket bike and remain safe and not have to worry about injury.
