Riding Your Way To Health

By Samuel Sawyer

No matter what kind of biker you are, there will surely be one type that fits you; whether it's a comfort bike which is used by almost everyone, or something more specific like a trail bike or light duty mountain bike, cruiser bike, and a heavy mountain bike. No matter which type of bike or biking interests you, biking is a great way to increase stamina, improve cardiovascular strength and achieve all around better fitness.

Recumbent bikes have become very popular for older riders. Recumbent bikes are unusual in a way that you lean back when seated, which is very comfortable and distributes your weight evenly. Your buttocks are well supported in this kind of bike. It's similar to car driving in that you would have to extend you feet forward if you want to reach the pedal. But surprisingly, this bike is the fastest among the lot.

They say that since your weight is more comfortably distributed, there is less pressure on your legs which gives it more power when pedaling, quite unlike the usual bike where your legs are beneath you. The position may be unusual, and it may be awhile before you become comfortable enough to ride this way, but recumbent bikers would tell you that when you finally get the hang of it, "normal" bikes aren't as fun anymore.

Mountain biking is a popular activity that is enjoyed by a wide age range of people. Heavy duty mountain bikes can be quite costly, so it may be best to talk to a mountain biking organization about bike rental. You also have the option to just get a light duty mountain bike which will work just as well on a regular road. You might think it's difficult with what you see on TV, but think again. There are beginner courses too! A bit like ski trails, the courses are rated based on difficulty: green for easy, blue for intermediate, and pink for difficult. Go slowly, mountain biking can be hard on the joints and you'll need to learn how to handle the bike to minimize chance of injury.

Whether you want a regular road or a mountain trail, just get on the bike and ride! This is one great workout that not only strengthens your heart but also gets rid of a lot of calories. And the best thing about biking is that it can be enjoyed by the whole family no matter how young or old.
