Which Golf Clubs Do You Carry?

By Pukka Wright

You can carry 14 different golf clubs in the USGA. A standard set of golf clubs is as follows: 3 woods, a driver, number 3 wood and a number 5 wood. You have 8 irons, numbers 3-9 plus a pitching wedge. The last club in a standard set is a putter. Las Vegas golf courses are just some of the great courses under the USGA.

The purpose of the golf set makeup is to find the right mix of 14 clubs for your game. The idea is to get a range of clubs, each designed to hit the ball a different distance. The problem comes as many golfers and club makers find it hard to make this function work for them.

The idea behind a golf set makeup is to replace those hard to hit clubs with clubs that are easier to use. But at the same time not lose distance on your hit. Suggestions such as hybrids to replace long irons are the sorts that are being talked about.

a) Driver

The driver has the lowest loft of the woods. The loft angle of a driver is anything from 7-12 degrees of loft. For the less experienced golfer the higher loft is better, the lower loft is for the more skilled golfer about.

What is it that stops all golfers being able to hit the golf ball as far a possible? The driver is the club you want to use for distance. The club makers state: "The longer the length, the lower the loft, the heavier the weight and the stiffer the shaft, the harder the club will be to be hit for any golfer". So it takes more skill to be able to use the driver correctly.

Your driver does not need to be the #1 wood. It can simply be the club you use to hit the ball the furthest from the tee, while keeping it straight. Many golf club companies are making drivers with high lofts.

All golfers have different swing speeds, for the golfers with the slower swing speeds a normal 1 wood club is wrong. Slower swing speeds need a higher loft in order to get the most out of their swing. For these golfers, a 5 or 7 wood would help them get the most out of their swing.

b) Fairway wood

Many golfers will say that the next club they can hit the ball furthest is their 3 wood. But for some this is not the case, their 5 wood or 7 is the next longest. This is because the loft of a 3 wood is low and golfers cannot get the ball high enough. This mean the 3 wood is often not the second longest hitting club.

Why not test a number of your clubs and see what works best for you. Golf holidays in the states are the perfect way to test your clubs. USGA has so many courses; golf Florida has some of the best in the states.
