By Don Smith

One of the things that transcends generations is the giving of a hunting knife. When a father decides to give a hunting knife to their child it is done as a symbol that they child has finally reached a point where they are nearly grown and able to care for themselves. In addition to giving the hunting knife, the parent also teaches their child about the best way to take care of their hunting knives.

When you are shopping for a knife you are going to have to decide between a folding knife and one with a fixed blade. Most hunters prefer a folding knife because the knife is really convenient Since the blade folds back into the handle, the knife can be tucked into your pocket. This makes it easy for you to carry around with you, improving the chances that you will have the knife when you need it.

Even though they might not be as convenient as a pocket knife, there are some serious advantages to having a knife with a fixed blade. One perk to a knife with a fixed blade is the price, they are usually considerably less expensive than the same knife in a pocket format. The other advantage to the fixed blade knife is that is usually stronger and less likely to break than a folding knife.

If you opt to go with a knife that has a fixed blade you will want to make sure that you have a sheath to store it in. Anytime that you are not actually using the knife, it should be in the sheath;. The second reason is so that you do not hurt yourself by accidentally grabbing the knife blade and slicing your palm open.

The key to making sure that a hunting knife lasts for a very long time is proper care. Whenever the knife is used, the blade should be cleaned right away and it should also be dried before the knife is replaced in the sheath. Cleaning the knife will help prevent the blade from rusting and free of bacteria.

Making sure that you have properly cleaned and dried the blade before putting it away will also help extend the life of you hunting knife

The whole purpose of having a quality hunting knife is to make field dressing easier This will not happen if the blade is dull. Keeping a whetstone in your hunting gear is one way to make sure that you are always cutting with a finely honed blade.
