Online RPG and MMORPG Games Explained

By Lia Lyn

Parents! Have you ever wondered what your children mean when they start saying things like "RPG" or "MMORPG"? If this is your case, you're not alone. "RPG" and "MMORPG" aren't new text messaging acronyms, they are abbreviations for some online games and this article is going to introduce you to them.

If you at least thought of the Internet when you first heard those unusual terms, you are on the right track. "MMORPG" and "RPG" stands for "massively multiple online role playing gaming" and "role playing games", which are just two aspects of worldwide gaming that involves thousands of players. Today's generation is fascinated with online gaming, which is an opportunity to play games over the Internet with hundreds of people at a time.

Accessible to anyone with a computer and fast Internet connection, there are thousands of online games available to play by anyone. Sometimes they are free and sometimes you need to pay to get in. They range from very easy to strange and more complicated. One thing that they all have in common however is that they are fun to play.

The role playing games require an extensive amount of time spend online, because the players assume the role of a game character in a play. The player is supposed to build up skills and tools and then interact with other characters. The acquiring of weapons takes time; nothing can be actually accomplished in a few minutes. The online role playing games can become extremely addictive and, depending on the complexity of the game, a person could spend up to several months at a game.

The role playing games require and encourage strategic thinking, but as parents, you may not be comfortable with the amount of time that playing these kinds of games can consume.

My best advice to you is to learn about these games along with your child and play together. It can be a lot of fun ! much fun!
