All Golfers Need a Warm Up

By Jerry Blackburn

Warming up before hitting the course is essential for even the most experienced golfer. To play golf without warming up first will undoubtedly make for a wasteful game; you'll surely be making up for bad shots made early on. Don't make your first handful of swings on the course your warm up shots. Instead give yourself some time and warm up at the driving range. It will be well worth the time.

One of the reasons to warm up before game is that you need acclimate yourself to the environment. Maybe the weather is different from what you're used to. Maybe it's particularly cold or windy which means you'll need to take some steps to compensate for this. By making some warm up shots you'll be able to see where the compensation is needed.

Another reason for a warm up is so you are mentally prepared for the game. An experienced golfer will tell you that much of playing well is being in a good mental state. If your first handful of shots are horrible then you'll surely have a low confidence level. Hitting some good shots on the driving range before your game will build up your confidence and keep you positive.

Don't just work on your drive when you warm up. This is a common mistake and some stop warming up once they've made a few successful drives. Do some putting and chipping as well so you'll be prepare for all of your shots.

Keep in mind any lessons you've recently had but don't take this time to practice new techniques. Don't let your warm up session become practice time. You'll waste your time and only tear down your self confidence since you'll be making errors until the new technique is perfected. This is also not the right time to try out new equipment no matter how perfect it is. You need to get accustomed to new equipment and that's not possible with just a warm up session.

As stated, you need to be mentally prepared for your games so while you're physically warming up, take some time to mentally warm up as well. If you have a lot on your mind then try to leave those pressures at home or the office. Golf is not a sport that is good for taking out your frustrations. You need to be focused and concentrate on your shots so clear your head before you start your game.

A golf warm up is essential for playing the best you can. Take a few swings, don't try out new equipment or techniques, and clear your head before you hit the golf course.
