It's hard to understand the mind of a city biker. There are definitely some positives to having a bike, but there are also times that I can't figure out why they are riding their bike. Weather is a big player in whether or not you like, hate, or just downright pity someone who is riding their bike.
Being a driver in the city is usually a bad experience. A large portion of the time, you are sitting in traffic and miserable with everyone else. Then you see someone on a city bike cruise by your window and you become even angrier, envying them being able to bypass the traffic that will most likely make you late to whatever it is you are trying to get to.
Then there is the times you are in your nice, warm, dry car on a day where the weather is extremely spiteful to bikers. The rain comes down, and at that point you just feel bad for the guy who is riding his bike because he has no choice. He's getting splashed by puddles, slipping on the pavement, and just overall not having the best ride of his life.
If you are a pedestrian, it is a whole different situation. You don't just envy the biker, you dislike them to a point. Your feet are tired, you have another 10 blocks to walk, and a city biker whizzes by you. You can't help but hate them a little bit as you trudge along. They are always making sure they know that they are going to get someone faster and easier than you are.
I am not one of those who owns a bike, but it is completely conceivable as to why someone would want to own one. Just one payment, and you have free, easy transportation. I think the key is to have both the car and the bike. Being able to ride your bike when it is nice and drive when it is bad out is the winning combination of fun and comfort.
