National Motorcycle Rights Issues You Have to Know

By Darnell Austria

Springtime has arrived and this year's bike week season just around the corner, a lot of motorcycle drivers are hitting the roads and byways that weave through this glorious nation with motorcycle helmets and motorcycle gear. We're all making our preparations or even dreaming of a great riding season filled with memories that will be remembered for a long time. There are countless destinations to check out and a lot of things to see that it can be hard to try where to cruise. The last thing on our mind is having our time interrupted by something as simple as a stop light. When you are riding through this great country, each state has their own restrictions relating to motorcycles and you have to know that just because your bike is 100 % legal in your county, it may not be in others. Something as simple as handlebar height can get you a ticket. After you've been stopped, the local enforcer can start asking questions and a string of violations may be noticed in addition. Before leaving, take a peek at the restrictions where you'll be roaming.

Over the past couple of years, we've been aware of motorcycle-only checkpoints. The question is, are these stops legalized? Well, the issue here is that while our state reps try to manage things out, we may be taking one on the chin. We hope, you won't ever have to be slowed at any stops, specifically a motorcycle-only stop. If this happens to you, it's always better if you absolutely have your paperwork in order and if you're cited for something in checkpoints, please do not sign that you're guilty. Ask for a hearing and take time to give it a shot with the judge. This can tie up the court system and at least there is a chance to express your side and there's a log of the judge's ruling. In addition, please write your representative and tell them that you believe your rights are being violated and you just want them to put a stop to this type of harassment. If you're traveling, this may be not possible. If you've been caught up in a motorcycle-only checkpoint stop, we want to know your story.

Virginia

The A.M.A. published that on Feb 13, 2012, the Virginia State Senate unanimously endorsed the bill, HB-187, that discourages motorcycle-only checkpoints and now the bill heads for Governor Bob McDonnell for consideration. If you join us in our out cry, please make sure to simply call the governor and address him that you wish for him to sign HB-187 into legislation. You can reach Governor Bob McDonnell at (804) 786-2211. This bill was introduced because Arlington County Police Department in Virginia implemented a motorcycle-only checkpoint at the time of Rolling Thunder on May 28th. The state of North Carolina has recently authorized an equivalent bill into legislation that puts a stop to motorcycle-only checkpoints.

This may be a real great example of our Motorcycle Rights Organizations taking action. A number of people cited to the A.M.A about the checkpoints and a call to action went out. House delegate, C. Todd Gilbert, presented H-B 187 along with your support; his hard work combined with the bike community wins a major fight. If you drive, you must choose what is best for you. To make sure that your voice is heard, be sure to take your time to participate. If you let others carry out the battle for you, make sure that they are on the same page just like you. You may not have the same opinion on every issue, but at least your side shall be recognized.

E16 Ethanol

Furthermore, the A.M.A. reports that the house committee approved a bill to require the E.P.A. to search for self-sufficient scientific review relating to the effects of 15% ethanol. The bill, H.R.3199, was introduced by Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R- WI.). The E.P.A. only used one Department of Energy assessment and harried this new source in the market. This bill likewise requires our support. Not only our motorcycles, but every gasoline engine is in danger of serious problems that will be caused by 15% ethanol. Our engines were not devised for this type of gasoline. The E.P.A. should never have set the green light for this fuel without having been evaluated more thorough. Using this E15 fuel will manufacturers' warranties and will consequently harm gasoline engines not suitable for this type of petrol. There is certainly no bike among the list of autos that were manufactured for E15.

Please have a look at the fuel pumps. This fuel may be in your preferred filling station now. Air cooled engines are especially in danger not to mention high end and off-road engines. This fuel will burn too hot and cause engine deterioration or failure. Go through your owner's guide book in case you have any questions with regards to the effects of E15 on your engines. We simply like to say thanks to the viewers for presenting their support. The next generation will have many battles to pass through while securing our motorcycle privileges. We also want to give thanks to our service men and women, past and present, that defend and fight for our own freedom.
