How Will One Use a Cardboard City Bike?

By Rob Sutter

When concerning the materials utilized to make a city bike, aspects like metal for the body for itself in addition to seats composed to leather may spring to mind. Bicycles are made with this in mind and there's no real need to change up how things are done. Someone didn't feel that way, though, and the result was something that no one has seen before. What came about was a bicycle made not of metal but of cardboard.

Africa has certainly gained a bit of press due to the invention of a cardboard city bike occurring there. As told about on the Hurriyet Daily News website, this bicycle in particular has the potential to bring down rates of congestion in the worse off areas of the country. One can't deny that there are plenty of good intentions behind the invention of this particular bicycle, especially in the areas that have been deemed poor. Biking companies like Linus have given their thoughts on the matter and the environmental message behind it is something that has to be commended.

As one would expect, a bicycle made primarily out of cardboard is something that went through a trial and error process. After all, cardboard isn't exactly the most standard product when it comes to cycling and it shows just how innovative some people can be when building a product. However, fate seemed to smile on Izhar Gafn, a 50-year-old amateur cycling enthusiast. Before long, he was able to finish the bike and it now stands to be mass produced in the future.

Gafn went through a great deal of trouble in order to perfect the bike. It took a year and a half for this particular ride to become absolutely perfect and much trial and error went into the testing process as well. Once those factors were accounted for and the cardboard was cemented into a form that could be utilized, a solution was then applied over the bike which consisted of minerals both waterproof and fireproof. It's clear that this bike is certified as one of the safest modes of travel for being so unorthodox.

I'd like to think that "ingenious" isn't the strongest word to describe the effectiveness of this very idea. Cardboard seems like something one would play with as a child as they imagine it as house. However, you can play with it now in your older years but in the way of a bike. It was made surprisingly well and the effort gone into it can be seen. It may not be the normal way to move about but it's an environmentally practical way to do so.
