When poker players end the game at showdown, cards are compared with one another to check who wins. There are 9 classifications of poker hands, starting from the strongest, unbeatable combination, down to the lowest unwinnable one.

Texas Holdem Poker Rankings - From Best To Worst

The first combination is known as Straight Flush. Straight flushes are 5 cards of the same suit that are also in the same series. A very good variation of this is the Royal Flush which are cards from Ace -Ten. Royal flushes are unbeatable and extremely hard to come by. Consider yourself lucky if you chance upon a Royal Flush even once in your plays.

The second arrangement of cards is known as Four of A Kind. This combination contains four cards of the same rank plus one side card known as the 'kicker'.

The third group is called Full House. Full Houses consist of two sets of cards; one in threes, and another in twos. (ex. 3 Qs and 2Js)

The fourth variation is called a Flush and maybe very similar to the Straight Flush. The main difference is that these cards do not have to be in order but must be of the same suit.

The fifth kind would be known as Straight. This combination is also like the Straight Flush except that these cards must be in sequence but won't necessarily have to be in the same suit. This is the only time that Aces can fulfil a special role in the combination. They may be placed either at the start of or the end of the combination. (ex. A-T or 5-A)

The sixth poker hand is Three of A Kind. This card is a combination of three cards of the same rank and two cards on the side.

The seventh and eighth combination may be mentioned as one only because they both contain alike cards of the same rank. These hands are called Two Pair and One Pair.

Two pair has two pairs of cards that are alike while one pair naturally has only one pair that are the same. It also follows of course that two pairs will have one card on the side while one pair will have two.

The last kind, called a High Card, is simply poker hands that do not fit any of the classifications above.

In all cases of ties, high ranking cards are always used as tiebreakers. In the event that both parties share the same combination, the kickers or cards on the side may be used to decide who wins.
