The 5 Top Point Guards From The Past Two Decades

By Paul Thurman

If you look at most successful basketball teams, there's a highly skilled point guard in place running the show on offense. These are the guys who make magic happen on the basketball court.

A good ball handler and a great passer can create instant offense on any team, and some point guards can defend the ball just as ably too.

We've been privileged enough to have some of the best point guards in the history of the sport during the last quarter century. I'd like to give my due to five of them, and I'll be ranking them in order. This all comes down to my opinion, and I hope you agree with my rankings here.

At number five, I put Steve Nash. This wouldn't have even crossed my mind five years ago, which is interesting when you consider his age of 35. Despite this, he's still playing some of the best basketball of his career and his MVP awards speak for themselves.

At number four, Chris Paul gets a spot on the list here. He's only been in the league for five seasons now, but what an impact he's made in that span. He's yet to win an MVP award, but he's due for one when you consider what he does for his team.

He's one of the best defenders at the position to ever play the game, and a shoe in to be near the top of the league in assists each year.

Another one of a kind player very worthy of a spot on this list is Jason Kidd. The modern day triple double king is an anomaly when you consider his ability to rebound despite his height. Kidd is another aging player who hasn't slowed down yet.

John Stockton. The all-time assists leader has to be on this list. Wonder why the Jazz made the playoffs for nearly 20 years straight, all the way until Stockton was over 40 years old? It was the combo of this phenom and Karl Malone.

Magic Johnson. Ervin Magic Johnson led the Lakers to multiple championships and most people credit this all to him. His ability to pass like few others did, rebound, and score the ball with ease made him one of the most versatile to ever play the position and one of the greatest to ever play.
