Buying Running Shoes - 9 Expert Tips

By Jacquie Cattanach

When it comes to running there is only really one piece of important "equipment" which is needed and that piece of equipment is good running shoes. I can not stress enough the importance of good runners that are specific to your foot style. If you don't get good sneakers then you may end up with blisters, you may lose a toenail or even worse. Besides the unnecessary pains, you will also experience a great amount of discomfort while you are running.

Below you will find 9 tips to help you choose and buy a good pair of running shoes.

1. Buying a shoe that is a half an inch longer in front is important. This makes sure that your toes are not cramped when you are running. Wriggling your toes is an easy way to check if they are they are the right fit. You are looking for a pair that your toes have space to move around easily.

2. Those of you that can afford it should make sure that you get two pairs of runners. This will allow you to alternate them and will not only increase the life that you get out of the shoe, but it will allow them to air out longer which is very important if you are a long distance runner.

3. If you really want to make sure that you have good running shoes you need to take them for a longer distance run. A short run is not enough, you need to go for at least one long run to find out how well they are going to work.

4. If you have an event that you will be running in you should make sure that you get your new running shoes in enough time to wear them in and get used to them during the training runs. This will allow you to go for a couple of runs while you wear them to find out just how comfortable they are. It is important never to wear brand new shoes on the day of the event.

5. Sometimes you may think that a shoe is comfortable when you are walking in them but when you start to run in them they may start to feel uncomfortable. You should go to a sports specific store to buy your running shoes. There are many stores that will have treadmills and you can run for a couple of minutes to see if they are in fact comfortable for your feet. Make sure to pay attention to any looseness that is behind your heel and check whether the balls of your feet are firmly gripped but your toes are free. There are many stores that are particular about returning shoes if they have been worn outside so make sure you get the right pair.

6. No amount of breaking in will transform a badly fitting shoe into a good one. Get one that fits you well, and take your time to pick the right shoe. It is better to pay a little more and get a nicely fitting shoe, than to get one that does not fit as well.

7. Different shoes have different capabilities. Some are made to be worn on the track alone, while others can be worn on hard surfaces like the road. Still others are made to be worn on rough terrain for trail running. If you are going to be running off-road, get runners that are designed for that. Sometimes choosing the cheapest shoe will only make the run uncomfortable apart from wearing out the shoes too quickly.

8. When your shoes wear out, it is important that you do replace them. Your shoe has a life span and it depends on their construction, but the average, you can expect your running shoes to last approximately 500 miles. If you are a mid foot runner you may be able to get some more miles out of them.

9. Purchasing your shoes later in the afternoon is a must because of the expansion in the feet which happens during the day. When you try your shoes on later in the day you will be able to avoid ending up with runners that are too tight fitting. You also should make sure that you wear the same kind of socks that you are going to wear when you run. Just bring along a pair of your usual running socks when you go shopping.
